An MBA can be a good path in a consulting firm as a partner. Associates receive training and learning on the job in many large companies. Partners are conducting background research and analysis. The combination of problem-solving skills and technical expertise is common for partners. Than work well, often associated with then receive promotions after some years of experience. However, to succeed as a consultant, the experience is what counts.
While many consulting firms like McKinsey entered with MBA studies, not everyone who has an MBA consultation. The experience is irreplaceable and shows a history of achievement and leadership positions. Some companies such as BCG, sponsor high performing partners wanting to pursue MBA degrees. This is a valuable option for those who want pursue an MBA, but not sure how the grade will be paid.
The disadvantage is that many experienced consultants apply to top MBA programs. While employment in a consulting firm top management is useful, the self-employed or working in small consultancies to work hard to do stand out. Having a specific focus, leadership experience and clear objectives, all are useful.
Moreover, if you work on your own, be sure to write detailed accounts of where and how clients were served. This demonstrates to employers that you are working. If the decision to obtain an MBA is in the table, make sure to study carefully the GMAT and future research schools (and companies recruiting from schools).
