Phd Counseling

Is it worth it to get a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the moment? Are you a psychologist?

I am interested to enter the field of Counseling Psychology and go for a Ph.D. so you have the options of becoming a teacher, a licensed psychologist, working in a University, etc, but I am wondering if the demand for psychologists are nonexistent, and if I'm going to spend seven years in a doctoral program at all. Are there psychologists lament go this route or is it still viable academic route to take? I'm debating to go that route or make senior management ed. I've noticed that programs are fully funded two years that allow you to have assistantships (work for the university) while learning. Mostly because I feel I'm so in therapy, but more academic counseling, mentoring, achievement motivation, conflict resolution, student development etc. Any advice? I graduated with my degree in psychology 2009.

Hi Rhonda, Your concern is very valid, especially in the current economy. Most doctoral programs in Counseling Psychology (and either PhD or PsyD) require a master's degree as a mandatory requirement. Not across the board, but it seems that every 75% of them do (the proportion is my opinion so it might be off). So it's still about six years of total graduate school (two teachers, plus four for PhD). In general, if you find a program in Counseling Psych does not require a master, is a longer program (5-7 years). Some of these programs are funded, but many are not. There are more Ph.D. programs are funded clinics Psych Advice unlike Psych. To better respond to your question, it would be useful you know specifically what you wanted to do as a career. If you are interested in therapy, a Masters in Counseling Psych would be sufficient, since it is the minimum they need to become a therapist. Honestly, getting a doctorate degree is not so great the difference in financial compensation. On average, earn about 10 up to $ 15,000 per year plus w / a document if you just had a master's degree. However, there are advantages for the title doctor. First of all, this may seem superficial, but is better. This is an advantage if you decide to open their own practice as it is more attractive to potential customers. Another advantage is that you can run more in the direction you want about what you work with demographic data. If you have a master, what kind of work within the parameters of his employer. If you have a Ph.D., is the leader, and can influence the trajectory of the demographic and treatment. Also, with a Ph.D., can be taught at university level. It is easier if you have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psych, but still can do w / a degree in counseling Psych. Hope this helps. Good luck to ya, lady!

Description

Effective adult counseling depends on a successful integration of empirical knowledge and theory with practice. Such a framework continues to be made explicit in this updated third edition of Counseling Adults in Transition, a practical guide for students, teachers, counselors, and all other helping professionals. In the decade since the second edition of this book, the pace of change has accelerated, and the world has become more complex. This new edition expands upon areas which have gained increased attention in recent years: Cultural diversity Spirituality in the lives of today's adults Advocating on behalf of clients Teaching clients advocacy skills The authors show how knowledge of adult development can be fruitfully integrated with essential helping skills. The resulting process-and-content model contains practical techniques for helping adults explore the important factors in their situations, understand what is normal about adulthood and life transitions, and enhance their abilities for successful coping. In addition, a special appendix written by Dr. Schlossberg has been added. This appendix on non-events encompasses practical suggestions and exercises for helping adults navigate life's disappointments and disillusionments. The clear aim throughout is to achieve, maintain, or increase adults' capacities to love, work, and play. *This new edition expands upon areas which have gained increased attention in recent years: Cultural diversity Spirituality in the lives of today's adults Advocating on behalf of clients Teaching clients advocacy skills
