College Graduates 2010 - Did you start your job search in your junior year?
A client who is receiving a degree in Finance and Marketing this spring at a university in the Mid-West, received a job offer from a prominent insurance company six weeks ago. How was this possible when according to an article published on CNNMoney.com on 11/18/2009, "college graduates this year (2009) have an amazing 40% fewer job prospects, and employment for candidates with bachelor's degrees are expected to drop 1% in 2010. "So what was special to my client that influenced a large corporation to extend a job offer almost five months before graduation?
The benefits of an internship!
To begin, My client had a major head "start" in their job search. During the summer after his second year, aggressively and successfully pursued secured an internship with the insurance company. During his internship, he acquired valuable experience in business and competently interface with a myriad department, applying his knowledge of MS Office for unloading activities of staffing, development of business models, and identify solutions to streamline operations.
As an intern, he won the trust and respect of management and colleagues. During the summer before her senior year, once again, was invited to participate in its internship program, demonstrating the same professional will and commitment as it did last year. The administration was not blind to this exceptional partner.
The purpose of the placement is to gain valuable business experience to improve the network itself, scholars apply the experience business practice, and provide relevant content to their own resume. Practice is not intended as a guarantee for employment. The program is designed to enhance our business acumen and experience in preparation for the 'real world'.
Be proactive with your job search!
My client received his professional resume at the beginning of his senior year and began its aggressive job search campaign. Method achieves search as a project, the incorporation of multiple channels, including - social networking, a network resume, letters to corporate executives, and ads Selective Release employment. Of course, your resume was also sent to an executive of the corporation where he interned.
What distinguished my customer of other college students? Aware of the current 'crisis of employment "was active with your job search from their peers long before class. He was persistent, maintaining a positive attitude and projecting an attitude that was "self-confidence." Armed with relevant practical experience, it acquired a professional resume, and got his job search as a project. Most importantly, the relationship, trust, and vital contribution to the company insurance during their internship ultimately paid dividends, resulting in a job offer.
Most of the 2010 college students will not be so fortunate. With prevailing rate of 10% unemployment, some may choose to continue their graduate studies. For others, temporary work, part time, or "opportunities independent ", while simultaneously pursuing their job search may be a necessity rather than choice! Remember, it is human nature to explore, persevere, and accept change! It is never too late to put a "stake in the ground" and establish a roadmap in the search for your career!
